A lot of pages about Owens Corning® Duration shingles still list a 130 mph wind rating and no impact rating. Neither number matches what Owens Corning lists today. Its current product page gives TruDefinition Duration a wind rating of up to 160 mph, with conditions attached, and a Class 3 impact rating.

This guide covers the current Duration colors, what a Duration roof typically costs in Middle Tennessee, and what the “lifetime” warranty really covers. Because we install Owens Corning shingles on homes across the Nashville area, we’ll also tell you where Duration fits and when an upgrade is worth it.

What Owens Corning Duration Shingles Are

Duration is Owens Corning’s flagship architectural shingle: a thick, dimensional shingle that sits in the mid tier on price. The current version includes:

  • SureNail Technology. A wide, highly visible fabric strip runs across the nailing area. The crew gets a clear target, and the nails land where there’s triple-layer reinforcement. Nails driven too high or too low can let shingles lift in wind.
  • Wind rating up to 160 mph when the roof includes the required Owens Corning components and starter shingles on both the eaves and the rakes. Think of that number as a ceiling under specific conditions, not a promise.
  • Class 3 impact rating. A step up from older Duration specs, though not the top rating. More on that below.
  • Class A fire rating in UL 790 (ASTM E108) testing.
  • StreakGuard algae resistance, 25 years. This coverage requires an approved Owens Corning hip and ridge product, and availability varies by area.

Two of those conditions are easy to lose on an estimate. Some bids leave off starter shingles along the rakes (the sloped gable edges), and the 160 mph rating assumes they’re there. A generic ridge cap can cost you the full algae coverage. Make sure your scope lists both.

The algae piece matters more here than in a lot of places. Those dark streaks running down a roof are algae, and our humidity and heavy tree cover feed it. On Middle Tennessee roofs, streaks usually show up first on north-facing slopes under oaks and maples, where shingles stay damp longest after a rain.

Evergreen Mist, Gray Tweed, and Mountain Pine became available to order on January 1, 2026.

Duration FLEX, the impact-resistant version, comes in 9 colors: Black Sable, Brownwood, Driftwood, Estate Gray, Onyx Black, Sand Dune, Storm Cloud, Summer Harvest, and Teak. Owens Corning also makes a Duration COOL line with solar-reflecting granules. It depends on region, so ask whether your supplier stocks it locally.

Picking a color for a Middle Tennessee home

Products vary by region, so don’t choose from a phone screen. Look at a full-size shingle, or better, a finished roof in daylight. A color that looks gray in a brochure can read brown in afternoon sun. A few pairings tend to work well with local housing:

  • Red-brick ranches (think Donelson and Madison): Driftwood and Estate Gray, versatile gray-browns that don’t fight with red brick.
  • Brick-and-siding subdivisions (Hendersonville, Murfreesboro): Brownwood or Teak with brown or tan brick; Williamsburg Gray for a cleaner, newer gray.
  • White modern farmhouses (Franklin, Spring Hill, Mt. Juliet): Onyx Black against white board-and-batten.

What about heat? Lighter shingles reflect more sunlight than dark ones, which can mean a slightly cooler attic in a Nashville summer. Attic ventilation and insulation make a bigger difference than color, though. And while darker colors hide algae streaks better, they don’t prevent them.

Duration vs. Duration FLEX and STORM in Hail Country

Middle Tennessee gets hail in spring and fall, so this question comes up a lot. Base Duration carries a Class 3 impact rating. Two versions in the line go further:

  • Duration FLEX uses SBS polymer-modified asphalt, which keeps the shingle more flexible. It carries a UL 2218 Class 4 rating, the highest impact rating available.
  • Duration STORM adds WeatherGuard Technology, a polymeric backing on the shingle. It also carries UL 2218 Class 4.

Some insurers offer a premium discount for Class 4 shingles in some areas. Not all do, and any discount depends on your policy. Call your insurer and ask before you pay for the upgrade. (This is general information, not insurance advice.)

Class 4 doesn’t mean hail-proof. Hail that’s big enough can still damage any shingle, and our hail size guide covers the sizes that cause damage.

Is the upgrade worth it? FLEX and STORM cost more than standard Duration. They tend to make sense if you plan to stay a long time, your insurer confirms a discount, or your street has already been through a hail claim. They’re harder to justify if you’re selling in a few years, or if that money would do more good fixing soft decking or poor attic ventilation. A standard Duration roof installed well beats a Class 4 roof installed over problems.

What an Owens Corning Duration Roof Costs

Most full roof replacements in Middle Tennessee run $15,000 to $30,000, and a Duration roof typically lands in that range. The shingle itself moves the total less than most people expect. These factors matter more:

  • Roof size, measured in squares (100 square feet each)
  • Pitch, since steep roofs take longer and need more safety setup
  • How many old layers need tear-off
  • Rotted or soft decking that needs replacing
  • Valleys, chimneys, skylights, and vents
  • Ventilation upgrades
  • Stepping up to FLEX or STORM

Living space doesn’t tell you roof size. A sprawling one-story brick ranch can carry more roof than a two-story with the same square footage, because its whole footprint sits under shingles. Older homes are also more likely to reveal a second layer or soft decking at tear-off, so ask how your estimate prices decking replacement.

For a full breakdown, see our guide to roof replacement cost in Nashville. Any price you find online is a range, not a quote. Your written estimate should itemize the scope.

Many homeowners also weigh Duration against GAF’s Timberline HDZ. Both are flagship architectural shingles with a wide nailing zone, and both tie their best wind and algae coverage to required accessories. On paper, the specs sit close together. Installation quality matters more than the brand name.

What the Duration Warranty Actually Covers

“Limited Lifetime” sounds simple. Owens Corning’s standard warranty breaks down like this:

  • Lifetime coverage for manufacturing defects, for individual owners of single-family homes, for as long as you own the home.
  • The first 10 years are non-prorated. During that window, the warranty includes labor to repair or replace defective material. It excludes tear-off and disposal.
  • After year 10, coverage becomes prorated and materials-only.
  • Wind blow-off coverage for 15 years, starting after the shingles thermally seal. A roof installed during a cold stretch may not fully seal until warmer weather arrives.
  • Algae coverage for 25 years, with the approved hip and ridge.
  • No workmanship coverage. The manufacturer’s warranty doesn’t cover an installer’s mistakes.
  • One transfer to a second owner, within 60 days of the sale, with a fee.

You don’t have to register, but Owens Corning recommends it.

A lifetime warranty also doesn’t tell you how long the roof will last. Architectural shingles typically last about 20 to 30 years in our climate, depending on ventilation, tree cover, and storm exposure.

Owens Corning also offers enhanced system warranties with longer non-prorated coverage, but only through contractors credentialed in Owens Corning’s contractor network. Stellar is not one of those contractors. A Duration roof we install carries Owens Corning’s standard limited warranty, plus our own lifetime workmanship warranty on every roof replacement. That covers installation: the part the manufacturer excludes, and the part most likely to go wrong.
